What to Expect in Your First Hypnotherapy Session

Knowing what to expect in your first session can help you arrive feeling at ease and ready to get the most from the work.

Your first hypnotherapy session is different in character from the sessions that follow — it serves as both an introduction and a foundation. Understanding what will happen from the moment you arrive can help you feel at ease and focus on the work rather than the unknown.

The session begins with a conversation. Neil will take time to hear about what has brought you to hypnotherapy, what you have been experiencing, and what you hope to change. This is not a formal clinical interview — it is a genuine conversation, conducted at your pace, that allows Neil to understand your situation fully before any therapeutic work begins. You are in control of what you share and how much detail you go into.

This initial consultation is also your opportunity to ask questions. If there is anything about the process, the approach, or what to expect that you are unsure about, this is the time to ask. Neil will explain clearly how he proposes to work with your particular issue and what the likely shape of the programme will be. You should leave this part of the session feeling genuinely informed and comfortable with the plan.

In most first sessions, there is a period of hypnosis following the consultation. The first hypnotic experience is typically focused on familiarisation — allowing you to experience what the hypnotic state feels like, without the pressure of deep therapeutic work. This is partly practical (everyone responds somewhat differently to the induction process) and partly about building confidence that you can enter a useful hypnotic state.

Some introductory therapeutic work may also take place in this first session, depending on the issue being addressed. For phobias and habits, Neil may begin the main therapeutic work in the first session; for anxiety, stress, and confidence work, the first hypnotic experience is often more exploratory.

The session ends with a brief debrief — an opportunity to share what you noticed, ask any questions that arose, and agree on any between-session practices Neil suggests. These might include a simple self-hypnosis exercise, a mindfulness practice, or a reflective task. They are always manageable and clear.
