Can You Have Hypnotherapy While on Medication?

Most medications are entirely compatible with hypnotherapy. Here is what you need to know.

One of the most common practical questions people have before starting hypnotherapy is whether their medication is compatible with the process. For the large majority of medications and conditions, the answer is yes — hypnotherapy is entirely compatible.

Antidepressants — including SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, and MAOIs — are compatible with hypnotherapy. There is no interaction at the pharmacological level, and many clients engage in hypnotherapy specifically to support the process of either managing a condition alongside medication or working toward a gradual reduction in medication under medical supervision. Any changes to medication should always be discussed with and supervised by a prescribing doctor.

Anxiolytics (anti-anxiety medications including benzodiazepines) are generally compatible, though high doses of benzodiazepines can affect the quality of the hypnotic state by inducing a level of sedation that reduces the client's active participation. This is rarely a significant practical obstacle.

Antipsychotic medications and mood stabilisers warrant more careful consideration. For clients with a history of psychosis or bipolar disorder who are currently stable and under psychiatric care, hypnotherapy may well be appropriate — but it is important to discuss this with your psychiatrist beforehand. Active psychotic states are generally not appropriate for hypnotherapy.

Pain medications — including opioids — are compatible with hypnotherapy, and hypnotherapy for pain management can sometimes support a reduction in analgesic requirements, under medical supervision.

ADHD medications (stimulants and non-stimulants) are compatible with hypnotherapy.

The most important practice is transparency with Neil about all current medications at the initial consultation. This allows him to adapt the approach where necessary and to make an informed assessment of suitability. If he has any concerns about compatibility, he will discuss them openly and may recommend consultation with your prescribing doctor before proceeding.
